The Surrey Union Hunt was formed in 1798 when two packs owned by the Leech family and the Reverend Samuel Godschall joined forces. About fifty years later the Hunt and Volunteers combined to organise race meetings, the first of which took place in 1846. They were well supported, with racing continuing for the next 16 years until a final card was staged on Friday 5th December 1862. The all grass course had easy fences and one demanding brook. The meeting opened with the Volunteers Cup which was won by Mr Witty’s Quicksilver, while the Farmer’s Steeplechase for a Silver Tea Service went to Mr Edward’s Nelly, beating Mr Fletcher’s Vanity. The feature race, the Surrey Hunt Cup, was won by The Slasher at 2/1 On favourite. |
